![]() Yes, Tales of Phantasia involves time-travel! I was really surprised to see this, as everybody always made it seem like Chrono Trigger/クロノ・トリガー was the only game with time-travel back in the mid-90’s. If you read the story summary all the way til the end, you’ll see that I mentioned Cless and Mint getting transported to another point in time. Things basically take off right away in Tales of Phantasia – no slow burn here! I know it probably seems like I spoiled 50% of the game, but all of that honestly happens within the first hour or two of the game. That’s about as far as i’ll go with the story summary. What happened to Cless and Mint? Did they get sent to a different point in time? Did Dhaos end up killing Cless and Mint? If not, did Dhaos kill Morrison and Chester, destroying any chance of Cless and Mint ever being able to return to their original time period? Why did Dhaos even get sealed away in the first place? Before they know it, Cless and Mint get both suddenly wake up in a familiar place, but in what seems like a different time period… Morrison tells the party that he’s going to send them back in time, and promptly begins casting a spell. Morrison takes it a step further and tells the party that there isn’t anyone in existence at this current point in time that’s strong enough to defeat Dhaos. ![]() Morrison, having fought Dhaos before, understands that there is no way he can take on Dhaos alone, and the party being as weak as they are won’t be any help. Dhaos doesn’t really show any appreciation and promptly kills Mars, immediately focusing on Morrison and the party. Mars succeeds in breaking the seal, returning Dhaos into existence. Mars plans to unseal Dhaos, hoping that he’ll be granted power in return. Mars reveals that he is essentially a cultist who worships Dhaos and plans to use Cless’ pendant to break the seal that’s been sealing Dhaos away this entire time. Upon arriving in the chamber, the party sees the leader of the group of men who destroyed Cless’ home village, a man named Mars, holding Cless’ pendant. Mars getting ready to break the seal on Dhaos Cless gets abducted in the middle of the night and gets his pendant taken away from him. The men who destroyed Tortis Village arrive in town in the middle of the night, and fearing a similar fate as the rest of Cless’ family, Cless’ uncle tells the men that Cless is sleeping upstairs. Upon arriving and meeting up with his uncle, Cless decides to rest at his uncle’s house for the night. Cless sets off to try to find his uncle in the nearby town of Euclid. With both Cless and Chester’s families dead, the two decide to bury their family members and leave town immediately just in case the men who destroyed the village return again. Cless’ parents seemed to have just barely survived, but with only a few last breathes left they tell Cless that the reason the village was attacked was because a group of men stormed the village in search of the very pendant that Cless received as a birthday gift. Still oblivious to what happened, Cless and Chester return to their houses only to see their family members laying on the ground dead before them. Cless and Chester return to Tortis as fast as they can, only to see the village in utter ruin with no signs of life.
